VIFF — Through Black Spruce
Based on the rivetting novel by Joseph Boyden, Director Don McKellar does a great job of bringing it to the big screen.
The main character, Annie, leaves her small Cree community to search for her missing twin sister in the big city of Toronto. Annie is played by Tanaya Beatty who herself is Indigenous — which today is still remarkable in the film industry. Hopefully it won’t be for long.
Tanaya originally read the novel when she was only 18, and loved it. Now at 27, she lands the lead role.
Fantastic film, and yet another deep look into society’s treatment of Indigenous women.
