VIFF — What They Had

A touching film about Alzheimer’s and the impact on everyone involved.

Siblings are regularly confronted with challenges every day that come with aging parents. Elizabeth Chomko does a great job in this film of illuminating what a son (Michael Shannon), daughter (Hilary Swank), grandchild (Taissa Farmiga) and husband (Robert Forster) go through when Alzheimer’s hits their beloved (Blythe Danner).

There is laughter, tears, anger and fear as each family member navigates this foreign road. What is lovely is how each person’s own life is “righted” as a result of a trauma that cannot be ignored. When you are staring at a tragedy, the mirror it provides often allows us an opportunity to make peace with our own shortcomings or circumstances.

I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
