Never try to convey your idea to the audience — it is a thankless and senseless task. Show them life, and they’ll find within themselves the means to assess and appreciate it. — Andrei Tarkovsky

The MindBreach Collective is an emerging space for authors and readers who seek inspiration through science fiction and speculative fiction.

This publication features stories, reviews, and poems. Our science fiction is less about space battles, tractor beams, and reviews of the latest mega-franchise. We seek to create a space for authors and readers who want to speak about the unspeakable and who look beyond the typical assumptions and flavours of the day.

We want your perspective to inspire others to think differently and may even contradict your original thought; paradoxes are welcome.

We avoid a strong ideological stance. We understand nuances are essential for the stories we publish and that truth, whatever it may be, will never fall into a clear-cut opinion.

Stories we like

We welcome completed drafts about speculative fiction and science fiction, broadly defined, including:

  • Stories that challenge the anthropocentric view
  • Mindbending story puzzles
  • Stories about AI, nature of AI, nature of intelligence
  • Satirical takes on technology, future society, and listicles
  • Philosophical discourses that uproot existing narratives
  • Critiques and reviews of speculative fiction and science fiction works

Submission rules and guidelines

You must be a Medium member and a part of the Medium Partner Program.

All stories must comply with Medium’s guidelines and with Medium’s Ad-Free Policy, Content Guidelines, Curation Guidelines, and Rules. Please review them before you submit a draft. We steer clear of erotica, politics, or other sensitive subjects.

  • Drafts must be a minimum 4-minute read. From our experience, long-form content performs the best in this publication so don’t hesitate to send quality stories even if they are over 10 minutes (2500 words) read.
  • Unpublished drafts only.
  • If your piece is non-fictional, sources must be cited at the end of the story. The credibility of sources matters.
  • Submissions must be proofread and properly formatted.
  • All images must be copyright-free, and the source of the image must be mentioned.
  • Having a featured image with a caption is mandatory. All images used in the story must have captions.
  • You must select “MindBreach Collective” as one of your tags for topics. In addition, you should tag your story with ‘science fiction’ or ‘speculative fiction’. The other three are your choice.
  • You are free to remove the story after you have submitted it if you’ve changed your mind. But once it is published, you are not allowed to remove it from the publication.
  • “Medium is not a place for fully AI-generated stories, and 100% AI-generated stories will not be eligible for distribution beyond the writer’s personal network.” — Medium’s Quality Guidelines. Echoing this stance, heavily AI-influenced submissions will not be accepted. Our readers want to be inspired, not read bland, regurgitated content from a silicon-trapped algorithm struggling with a lack of self-awareness.

Submission Format

We want your articles to have maximum views. Here are a few insights on what works in this publication. Submissions must have the following format:

  • Title — short titles are preferred, i.e., one line for a title is enough and no more than two lines long.
  • Subheading — a short sentence stating what the poem or story will be about.
  • Photo — free photo, i.e., from Unsplash photos (that can be accessed in the draft process while writing your Medium post), or use one of your own photos.
  • All photos must state in the image caption: the name of who the photo belongs to and a web link from where the photo was found.
  • Submissions must be thoroughly checked for spelling and grammar. Pieces with excessive errors will be returned for improvement. Consider using Grammarly, a free tool.

How Do I become a writer or editor of the MindBreach Collective?

  1. Read and apply the guidelines above.
  2. In order to be added as a writer, comment on this piece saying you’d like to contribute.
  3. To be added as an editor, comment on this piece saying you’d like to be an editor and provide a writing sample via a link on Medium or another platform.
  4. Once you are added (please allow a couple of days), submit your piece to the publication as a draft.
  5. Support other writers by reading their MindBreach Collective stories and reviews! Engagement with fellow writers. Make sure to read the stories of your fellow writers in the pub and give them a boost.
