Hate the Media? How Do You Like Things Now?

We laid off most reporters and shut down lots of newspapers, and now society is just wonderful

Sometime around 2010, I sat at my newsroom desk and read a quote that went something like this:

“Wait until people who hate the news media see what’s going to replace it.”

It’s OK to hate reporters

You’ve probably seen the infamous pro-lynching T-shirt that says “Rope. Tree. Journalist. Some Assembly Required.” It’s OK, though — the wearers are only advocating the murder of journalists, not good people.

As everybody knows, journalists are terrible people who feed on the tragedies of others for money. They are a flock of vultures who will do anything to sell papers.

I found it irritating to hear such insults while eating a lunch of peanut butter sandwiches or leftovers at my desk.

The dichotomy between journalists and media owners

If you own a major media outlet or are a top executive at one, you are rich. If you work as a journalist — unless you are part of a very tiny minority of celebrity talking heads — you probably make working class wages.
