Trump’s Supporters are Going to be Very Disappointed

Why MAGA’s ultimate failure is a feature, not a bug

In 2018, my wife went to El Paso to provide pro bono representation to migrant parents whose children were kidnapped and held for ransom by Donald Trump. I’m not speaking hyperbolically, either. Their children were forcibly removed, and many were given pre-populated forms with the box checked indicating they agreed to waive their right to an asylum hearing.

“Just sign here,” they were told, “and you can get your child back.”

One man she met had been deported no fewer than four times. Obviously ICE agents were doing their jobs, but despite the raids and the fines the chicken processing plant where he worked kept having him back. It just made economic sense.

And it made economic sense to him too, despite the risks. He showed my wife his hands, scarred by the bones that lacerated his palms and the fingers that froze and unfroze countless times as he broke down one icy animal carcass after another. Apparently, these conditions were so much better than what he could find at home, that on his last trip he brought his teenage son along.

And he’s not unique. Child labor is alive and well in America. Little Miguel misses school and gets…
