My husband’s father lived through the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands.

As an American, I didn’t personally know anybody who had lived under Nazis until my marriage, but I understood Nazis were evil. I read Anne Frank’s diary. I read The Upstairs Room. Later, I read Night by Elie Wiesel and a whole library of similar books, always trying to understand what attracts some people to evil. My high school did a surprisingly good job of covering the Holocaust, complete with explicit pictures. Some of them are still burned into my brain.

So I struggle to understand how the world is ready to give Nazis another go.

I ran into a Nazi in the wild last year

It was at the funeral for an American WWII soldier who fought the Nazis in Europe.

I saw a pretty woman with elaborate blond braids there. I like to braid my hair but I’m no good at it and usually wear a single side braid because that’s all I can manage. Her braids looked fabulous, and when I admired them, I guess she mistook me…
