The Power of the Subconscious

David Rock (author of Your Brain at Work) said if the power of your conscious mind is one cubic foot, the power of your subconscious is the Milky Way.

I try to leverage this.

Sometimes it’s intentional — sometimes it’s accidental.

Accidental: I completed my work designing a landing page for a client — ticking off all the items on my checklist to make sure all the details were correct.

I woke up the next morning and the first thing on my mind was the Privacy Policy of that site.

Making an update to the privacy policy wasn’t even on my checklist — but my subconscious knew it should be.

Intentional: I needed to create a logo for a landing page. I simply kept that idea in my head — but I wasn’t thinking of designs or solutions. I was just thinking:

I need to do this and it needs to be creative.

I kept this idea in mind for a purpose — to plant a seed in my subconscious.

Two days later, I woke up and had the design in my head.

It’s obvious that the subconscious mind works best at night when the “thinking” part of our brain quiets down.

Note: I heard the comment about the cubic foot vs the Milky Way on David Kadavy’s podcast interview with David Rock.
