The Earth Diet
Everyone points a finger at the government at not being active enough in the fight against climate change but also feel helpless when it comes to contributing individually towards this this mission. You certainly don’t want to walk to your office or turn off the fan. What if I tell you a tiny change in your diet can help save our planet. It doesn’t sound like much, but it has a huge impact on the climate.
Researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce an individual’s carbon footprint from food by up to 73 per cent. Meanwhile, if everyone stopped eating these foods, they found that global farmland use could be reduced by 75 per cent, an area equivalent to the size of the US, China, Australia and the EU combined. Not only would this result in a significant drop in greenhouse gas emissions, it would also free up wild land lost to agriculture, one of the primary causes for mass wildlife extinction.
Now here comes TED (The Earth Diet) a mobile application that allows one to alter his/her diet according the carbon emissions per meal. One can compare the amount of emissions of various meals. This app also suggests complete meals which are not only healthy but also help the planet. One has to simply enter his/her diet plan or the amount by which they want to reduce their carbon footprint to get intelligent suggestions. You also get links to articles which you can share to raise awareness on the topic. TED does’t want one to eat only vegetarian food, infact it tells you how much meat you can consume which will be considered safe for the environment. It is just like any other diet app on your phone which also helps keep check of the place you live in. So, let’s eat to save our home.
