Dear Turmeric,

I remember when my grandmother used to hail your praise by explaining to us about your healing benefits. Any cut or scrape, and my mother would run to make a turmeric paste.

Apart from your antiseptic properties, you bring sunshine to our food. Your bright yellow color adds the happiness that is needed by our digestive system.

However, your purity is often questioned in this instant world. With everything demanded instantly, you are fabricated at times with artificial coloring as no one has the patience these days to treat you with love and care.

You Are the Humble Spice

Apart from being just a spice, you have an emotional connection with Indian weddings. The famous ‘Haldi’ ceremony takes place a day before the marriage unites people together and the bride and groom glow on their wedding day, all thanks to you.

But you are humble. You don’t take any credit. You do your job and heal people in silence.

Your importance, though, is felt now more than ever. As everyone is chasing to achieve their weight loss goals, you are added in smoothies, morning teas and various other concoctions. It’s ironic that even though you have been in existence for centuries, your value is realised now in fad diets and cosmetic creams.

You Are a Balm to Our Soul

Your earthly smell, when mixed with water, is a balm to the soul. As people have become lazy over time, they don’t want to take the time to form a relationship with you by grinding you into a fine paste and developing a deep bonding. Instead, humans prefer packaged products added with several harmful chemicals. You must be laughing at our laziness, I know, but hey, we are always pressed for time even though we don’t have a train to catch.

But anyway, you be you, and as they say better late than never, we too will come back to the age-old practices of forming an everlasting relationship that our ancestors so highly preached.

Thank you for being a poor man’s medicine and a rich man’s fad. Wherever you are, keep shining and be the natural healer that you are.

Yours truly,
A big fan of natural spices.
