How lip balms actually work

We all love lip balms. The feeling of the moisturised plump lips. But do they actually work? And if so, how?

Lip balms do not actually moisturise your lips

What the do is that they create a waxy, oily layer on top of your lips to protect the moisture coming from within your body from escaping from your lips and leaving them dry. So, at the end of the day, the best way to really moisturise your lips is to drink plenty of water throughout the day and coat your lips if you need to protect them or if the start to feel just a bit more tense.

When do I need to protect my lips?

First of all — during the summer.

When the sun is up burning every part of your bare skin, put your lip balm on. I strongly suggest putting a heavy coat of SPF containing lip balm balm on, especially during those days when you know you'll be out in the sun all day. That includes festivals. I know looking cute at a festival is a must, but honey, forget the lipstick, forget the lip gloss, put an SPF lip balm on. I cannot even tell you how many times I ignored it and couldn't smile the next day without my lips bursting and bleeding.

Second of all — winter.

During winter, the air is dry and that is why you need to moisturise your hands, face, and lips! Since the air is dry and it tends to be more windy — the basics of physics tell us that in this kind of situation, the humidity from our unprotected parts of body tends to escape. So cover your lips up with a nice coat of our MINIKIN Lip Balm. If you decide to get the entire MINIKIN you will also get a hand cream to protect your hands.

Thirdly, when your nose is stuffy.

When you need to breathe with your mouth only, the same thing happens as during winter. It gets windy around your lips a lot, so the moisture tends to evaporate from your lips. So keep your lip balm on and go for it every time you feel your lips are getting chapped. When you're getting ready for bed, remember to give your lips a heavy coat of your lip balm so that it lasts you all night.

My lips are chapped already? What do I do?

In this situation, unfortunately, lip balm will not help you. This skin on top of your lips is probably already dead and damaged. What you need to do is give them a good scrub. There are tons of recipes online on how to make a lip scrub. What you'll need is probably just sugar and some coconut oil. However, if your lips are gently and you want to treat them as they deserve, try taking your towel immediately after you showered and run it over your lips to get rid of the dead skin. Toothbrush works as well.

After you exfoliated your lips, put a lip balm on to protect them as by scrubbing them you have taken away all of their natural oils.

WARNING: Never lick your lips

By licking your lips you are getting rid of you skin's natural protective oils. Saliva contains enzymes that are made to break them down. So if you find yourself licking your lip, PUT THE LIP BALM ON!
