For Web3 Communities

What is Token Gating?

Commonly referred to as the next evolution of gating a community, virtual experience or physical experience via digital collectible; essentially, it boils down to a path for web3 projects to protect and monetize their content by controlling access through an NFT.

If you’re an experienced web3-er than you may also come across the acronym TPP (Token Protected Pages) where a created token or existing token can be utilized for gating with ERC-20, 721, and 1155 tokens on Ethereum.

While token gating is still in the early stages of innovation, I believe it’s a key component in the mix of elements aiding and supporting the broader adoption of blockchain protocols, NFTs, and web3 communities.

According to Google, we (MintGate) know a thing or two about token gating 👀

Here are 10 use cases for ways a web3 community could deploy TPP for their community content .

  1. If a creator wants to grow their web3 community, they can use token gating to incentivize people to join. By requiring people to hold a certain amount of tokens to access certain content or features, the creator can ensure that only people who are interested in the community will join.
  2. Token gating can also be used to reward people who contribute to the community. For example, a creator could give out tokens to people who post helpful content or participate in discussions. This would help to encourage people to be active in the community and contribute to its growth.
  3. Token gating can also be used to fund the development of new features or content for the community. By requiring people to hold a certain amount of tokens to access new content, the creator can raise funds to pay for the development of that content.
  4. Token gating can also be used to give people access to exclusive content or features. For example, a creator could release new content or features to people who hold a certain amount of tokens. This would help to increase the value of the tokens and encourage people to hold them.
  5. Token gating can also be used to create a loyalty program for the community. For example, a creator could give out tokens to people who remain active in the community for a certain period of time. This would help to encourage people to stick around and contribute to the community.
  6. Token gating can also be used to give people discounts on products or services. For example, a creator could give out tokens to people who purchase products or services from the community. This would help to increase sales and encourage people to support the community.
  7. Token gating can also be used to give people access to early versions of new content or features. For example, a creator could release new content or features to people who hold a certain amount of tokens before it is released to the general public. This would help to increase the value of the tokens and encourage people to hold them.
  8. Token gating can also be used to give people the opportunity to participate in beta tests for new content or features. For example, a creator could give out tokens to people who agree to participate in beta tests for new content or features. This would help to ensure that only people who are interested in the community will join.
  9. Token gating can be used to give NFTs a soul and attribute real meaningful ownership around several different forms of media content.
  10. Token gating can also be used to give people the opportunity to invest in the community. For example, a creator could give out tokens to people who invest in the community. This would help to encourage people to support the community and help it grow.
