Business & Leadership trends for 2023

2022 was another year when remote and asynchronous working was much more important than in previous years for software developers. It’s hard not to see that soft skills are more critical than before. That’s why in Miquido, seeing these changes, we have created Team Lead roles for most of our standard developer’s technologies to focus more individually on the employee’s career.

One of the unwanted side effects of asynchronous and remote work can be too much shallow work, which may harm the quality of creating software.

There is a brilliant book by Cal Newport called “Deep Work”. The author describes this problem and shares insights on creating valuable things in less time, thanks to focusing on what you try to make.

Software trends to watch in 2023

Last year in Miquido was all about Flutter. As of today, it supports six platforms: iOS, Android, web, Windows, Linux, and macOS, allowing us to build apps for any screen!

We can really confirm the ever-growing interest in Flutter among developers and customers.

According to the StackOverflow statistics, there are much more questions about Flutter than the other competing cross-platform framework, React Native.

Moreover, one of Poland’s most extensive banking apps was released in Flutter. It proves its readiness for demanding solutions and wins customers’ trust.

Beyond a doubt, the global COVID-19 pandemic has caused a series of perturbations regarding our mindset on how to deal with the most common research methods, such as usability testing.

VR is coming to the rescue of Usability Studies.

Running remote usability studies is much easier regarding scheduling them anytime, anyplace, on a broader range of people from different parts of the world.

Finally, the time gap between online sessions and summarizing results is much shorter, making the whole process more effective in terms of time and money.

AI Trends to watch in 2023

Last year has seen a surge of new AI research collectives, many of which are open-sourcing breakthrough models at an unprecedented rate. Stability.ai and Midjourney have created “budget” text-to-image models that can rival OpenAI’s and Google’s. This showcases a drastic shift in AI research dynamics, overturning the belief that bigger labs are the only ones to develop groundbreaking models.

Speaking of discoveries, AI is helping to propel scientific research further than ever before. AlphaFold performed 200M protein structure predictions, DeepMind trained the RL model to control Nuclear Fusion, and ML helped to engineer an enzyme that can break down PET plastic into its component molecules in hours.

Meanwhile, in business, the Github Copilot code-generating tool is among the first tangible products based on large language models, and Lensa AI became #1 in App Store because of its “Magic Avatars” artwork-generating feature.

On the other hand, ethical considerations, data leakage issues, and methodological failures are still a concern and need to be addressed for this progress to be sustained. This heightened awareness of the importance of AI safety research has resulted in an estimated 300 safety researchers now working in large AI labs, compared to the under 100 identified the year before.

Artificial Intelligence is now all about creativity. GPT-3, DALL-E or Lensa-AI are several examples of many popular tools that changed how public opinion sees AI. In Miquido, we also like experimenting with art, this time using a slightly different tool — Neural Style Transfer.

Neural Style Transfer is a technique to compose images in the style of a different image. In a simple world, you can create your own portrait in Picasso’s style.

It’s worth leveraging this tool when dealing with content for gen Z. Since this generation values creativity and personalization and is currently entering the market as customers and employees, Neural Style Transfer can help multiple businesses like marketing agencies, eCommerce, or entertainment to create out-of-the-box content or solutions.

To do the particular artists inspired image, you need 3 pieces — a content image, a style reference image (for example, Picasso painting), and the input image you want to style — and blend them together such that the input image is transformed to look like the content image, but “painted” in the style of the “style image”. See what Picasso has created for us!

Web3 and NFT lessons learned and 2023 trends

It cannot be denied that 2022 will be remembered as a bear market on the blockchain scene.

You can see the outflow of capital and interest in technology. Fear and slow doubt reigned in the market.

Numerous hacks, the economic situation in the world, and the collapse of protocols and exchanges created fuel to support even more negative sentiments.

What is worth remembering is that these are the best times to gather knowledge and build: projects, relationships, or know-how.
