This week, we needed to find out more about how our users would like to use our product, and what refinements we can be making along the way as we create our first functional prototype.

To achieve this, we used 2 strategies: online surveys and in-person prototype tests.

Surveying community forums

We wanted to go out and explore what thoughts our target market has about our idea. Because VR has a very niche customer base, we decided to target places like Reddit, Oculus forums, and other websites where VR communities thrive, and ask members to complete a survey. We really wanted to understand what our future customer base thought would be the most popular use case for Scribble. You can find our survey here, and the responses we’ve gotten so far here.

Google Handwriting App

Because our product development cycle is so fast, we needed to continue conducting needfinding interviews to answer the questions we had after our last prototyping round. Our team is diligently working toward our first functional prototype, but in the meantime, we used a combination of the Google Handwriting app and the Gear VR to simulate sending messages using Scribble. We asked participants to rank their comfort level and ease of use when using a phone for text input, and when using a Gear VR controller. We measured comfort, ease of use, and the speed of text input when using the Google Handwriting app. We’ll publish the results from this round of prototyping at the end of the week.
