5 Reasons Why Your Small Business Needs a Website

Over the last 6 years, I’ve spoken with business owners from all over the United States. Some of the people I’ve spoken to were owners of tiny mom and pop shops, founders of innovative tech startups, and even executives at large corporations. Having networked with so many different entrepreneurs, it boggles my mind when I discover some of these businesses don’t have a website… or even worse, hearing that some businesses think that they don’t need a website.

Unless you started your business to fail, not grow your brand, or not attract new customers, your small business absolutely needs a website.

Still not convinced? Here are 5 reasons why every small business needs a website:

1. It Builds Credibility

We’re in the year 2017. If you don’t have a website or can’t be found anywhere on the internet, most consumers will simply assume your business does not exist. Two years ago in 2015, a study performed by Verisign reported that 84% of consumers believe that small businesses with websites are more credible than ones without an online presence.

If all of your competitors had a website and you didn’t, who looks more credible? Better yet, if you’re in an industry where most of your competitors don’t have a website, wouldn’t having a professional website set your business apart from those other boring companies?

2. Your Customers Expect It

As the days go by, consumers are getting smarter and more tech savvy. They’re also learning from previous experiences; both good and bad. This is why consumers are spending more time looking up companies through Google, Yelp and Facebook to learn about your company before spending their hard earned money on you. In fact, 60% of consumers expect companies to provide online content about their business on some sort of digital property, and more than half are heading straight to that company’s website to find what they are looking for.

3. Your Website is Open 24 Hours a Day, 7 Days a Week

Yes, you read that correctly. While your business might not operate 24/7, your website will. Hey, maybe you don’t want to be open at 5 in the morning, but some of your potential customers might want to find out more about your company at that time. Why make them wait until you open the doors? Having a website allows you to inform your future customers from the convenience of their home or when on the go, regardless of what day or time it is.

4. A Strong Website Can Attract New Customers

Did you know that 66% of small business owners say that finding new customers is a top concern. Why sit around, just hoping that a new customer will walk through your doors. Your website and a strong digital strategy can do the work for you. Your work isn’t done once you’ve launched your new site. You need a digital strategy specific to your goals, industry, and target market. Execute on your strategy, make tweaks, analyze, make more tweaks, and stay persistent. This will bring you closer to your future customers.

5. Your Competitors All Have a Website.. You Don’t!

Remember what I said about needing a website to look credible? Not only does it make your competitors look more credible when they have a website and your business doesn’t, but you are actually making things easier for your potential customers. Nowadays, consumers typically start off their buying journey by talking with their peers or using social media. Once they have an idea of what they want, they do some research. 72% of these people go online for this research. Guess what? They’re finding what they need by looking at your competitor’s website! If you can’t stay competitive with your competition, you’re giving these shoppers a reason to buy from another brand.
