Electric Scooter Accident Insurance
The Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) announced that it has added personal mobility devices (i.e. electric scooters) to the definition of “uninsured transportation devices” in auto insurance terms and conditions. It became applicable from November 10, 2020. Therefore, with this revised car insurance policy, people can get compensation through uninsured special contracts in the event of an electric scooter accident.
Previously, compensation was determined by the economic power of the perpetrator, but now even if the victim is not insured, he or she can receive compensation through uninsured car accident contracts.
Insurance Coverage Limit
Considering that the nature of electric scooters is closer to low-risk transportation, the guarantee limit has been adjusted to KRW 150 million in the case of death and KRW 30 million in case of injury.
What if the perpetrator refuses to provide compensation?
There are cases where a perpetrator might refuse to provide compensation for medical expenses incurred due to injury caused by an electric scooter. In that situation, the victim can receive compensation by submitting documents such as the perpetrator’s information to a traffic accident confirmation worker at the police station.
Can I get compensation for a hit-and-run accident?
In the event of a hit-and-run accident, compensation can be provided if the perpetrator is specified when reporting to the local police station. The insurance company pays the insurance premium to the victim and charges the perpetrator with the insurance premium later. The perpetrator’s liability for compensation is not exempted.
We hope this advice is helpful for you. It’s important to know your rights when you live in a foreign country. If you ever find yourself the victim of an unfortunate accident, make sure you report the incident promptly and receive compensation.
