Today we’re going to take a look at a serious condition, pulpitis. It can be caused by cavities, injury, fractures, or even grinding your teeth. It is in everyone’s best interest to avoid such a condition and today we offer some solutions on how to do just that. Read along as we discover the causes, symptoms, and treatments for pulpitis.

Pulpitis

Dental pulp includes blood vessels, nerves, and associated tissues in the teeth. It is found at the center of the tooth and is encased by enamel and dentin. Its primary function is to protect and defend the nerves and blood vessels of the tooth. Pulpitis refers to a disease that causes extreme pain due to inflammation of the pulp surrounding the blood vessels and nerves of the tooth.

Causes

The biggest cause of acute pulpitis is cavities. In addition to cavities, if the tooth is damaged by impact or infection, bacteria can enter the pulp causing swelling.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of pulpitis is sensitivity. In particular, sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet food increases significantly. Depending on whether it is reversible or irreversible pulpitis, the pulp’s pain response to hot or cold stimuli will last momentarily (reversible) or for many hours (irreversible).

In particular, pulpitis causes severe pain at night. The pain worsens as blood vessels in the pulp gradually become swollen and blood pressure rises. Therefore, sleeping in the wrong position can cause extreme pain, which can lead to insomnia. If left untreated, the infection can spread to other parts of the body, including the sinuses, jaw, or even the brain.

Treatment

The first thing to consider when diagnosed with severe pulpitis is neurological treatment. The necrotic nerves should be completely removed to prevent another infection. Then an implant or crown should be placed to prevent further irritation. However, in general, neurological treatment is not necessary if you detect pulpitis early enough. If it is caused by a cavity, simply removing the decayed area and installing a filling should resolve the pain. However, if the infection has progressed for a long time, you may need to completely remove the tooth.

As always, it’s important to get regular checkups to maintain our oral health. If you notice any pain or sensitivity, make sure to visit your dentist ASAP. It is better to catch conditions like this early before they develop into bigger issues — issues that might affect your heart or brain! Thanks for stopping by today, see you next time!
