In this article, we’re going to explore why getting our teeth cleaned regularly is so important. If you live in Korea and are over 20 years old, you can get your teeth cleaned once a year for KRW 10,000! Unfortunately, many people don’t know about this benefit. We’d like to encourage you to get regular dental checkups and take care of your health! Let’s find out why regular dental checkups are so helpful.

The Importance of Regular Dental Examinations

Getting your teeth cleaned is necessary to remove tartar and plaque buildup and prevent mouth disease. It is a very essential procedure for adults.

Symptoms of tartar and plaque buildup do not appear immediately. However, studies have shown that oral diseases such as cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis occur when symptoms last for a long time. If left untreated, germs penetrate into the body through the blood vessels of the teeth, which can cause heart disease, pneumonia, colorectal cancer, or other respiratory diseases. Inflammation caused by mouth disease affects the health of the whole body and should not be dismissed as a simple problem.

Most of the time, if you wait until you have symptoms, it’s already too late. The disease has already started, so even if you don’t have any symptoms, you should still get regular checkups. When cleaning your teeth, the doctor examines your overall oral condition, such as the health of your cheeks and tongue. Dentists can also check for oral cancer, so you should get a dental checkup at least once or twice a year.

In addition, people with diabetes and high blood sugar are vulnerable to mouth disease due to the damage done to the fine blood vessels in their gums. Those aged 65 and older often have poor fine motor skills and struggle to brush their teeth effectively. They may need to have checkups and teeth cleaning appointments more regularly. Elderly people also get tooth implants more often. They are at a higher risk for developing “implant surrounding inflammation” after surgery, so to combat this, they also need to have regular checkups.

It is also recommended that patients who are undergoing radiation treatment for thyroid or head and neck cancer get their teeth cleaned every three months. That’s because saliva dries up when receiving radiation treatment, so the frequency of plaque buildup or getting cavities is high.

Now that we know the importance of regular checkups, perhaps it’s time to schedule one! Taking care of our oral hygiene is not just about our teeth, it can affect our whole body. Let’s work hard to take care of ourselves and be healthy!
