My exams start in a week, and I’m currently doing what most students tend to do so close to exam time — procrastinating. To make myself feel better about it though, I’m procrastinating productively and writing an article about 5 excellent apps that help me beat procrastination. So here goes!

  1. Station — Mac OS (Free)
Taken from www.getstation.com

Their description: “Station is the first smart workstation for busy people.
A single place for all of your work applications.”

Why is it useful: Station is a fantastic app that helps me have all my important apps I use while studying within a single app. An app-ception, if you will. Sorry about the joke — but seriously, an extremely helpful application to beat procrastination. By ensuring that I never need to minimize an application to open another one, or even switch desktops, Station ensures that I never get distracted by anything else on my laptop.

2. Finimize — IOS (Free)/Newsletter (Free)

Their description: “Understand today’s financial news within 3 minutes. For free.”

Why is it useful: I like to keep up with the news, and end up using my iPad to skim through multiple apps to do so. Unfortunately, this often ends up taking a lot of time, and very often leads to me procrastinating by opening other apps. Finimize ensures that the top business news is delivered to my inbox every morning. Even better, they explain it so that it is extremely easy to understand not only what the news is, but also why you should care.

Disclaimer: I was recently appointed as a campus ambassador for Finimize.

3. iTimer — MacOS (Free)

Why it is useful: We’ve all heard of the Pomodoro technique — this is an extremely easy and minimalistic way to keep track of time while studying. The default option on the timer is 25 minutes — the time the pomodoro technique says we should work for before taking a break. It is easy to add more options though. You are also able to keep track of your breaks! Even better, it lives in your toolbar, and is extremely non-intrusive.

4. Noteshelf 2 — IOS (Paid; Rs. 550/US $6.99)

Their description: “Type your notes, record audio, sketch ideas, sign contracts, and a lot more right from your iPad and iPhone.”

Why it is useful: I only started using this app very recently, but it’s already replaced every other document annotation/reading/viewing app I used to use on my iPad. You can annotate, record audio, add text, sign documents, and lots more. It supports PDFs, presentations, word documents, and probably every other file type you could ever need. It has support for certain stylus such as the Apple Pencil, and the handwriting feels better than any other app I have ever used before. It even syncs between your iPad and iPhone, and supports all the major cloud services. I very rarely pay for apps considering the quality of a lot of free apps in the market, but this one is definitely worth it!

5. iA writer — Mac, IOS and Android (Paid, Rs. 1600 for Mac, Rs. 400 for IOS)

Taken from https://ia.net/writer/

Their description: “iA Writer removes distractions. Giving you a calm, focused, writing space.”

Why it is useful: My favourite minimalistic, markdown text editor. It removes all the distraction from typing, but none of the functionality. It lets you type without getting distracted by having to choose fonts, change sizes, resize photos, or anything else. It is is a completely blank screen, so that the only thing you’re focused on is the writing itself. One of my favourite features is the syntax highlight —“Find superfluous adjectives, weak verbs, repetitive nouns, false conjunctions” (in their words). The fact that it syncs between my laptop, iPad, and phone makes it extremely valuable for me as a college student. It is a one time payment, and doesn’t require any subscription or monthly payments. It even supports Medium integration, so you can now publish directly from the app, without any hassle!
