World Down Syndrome Day: Through Caley’s Lens

This World Down Syndrome Day, people across the globe are recognizing what people with Down syndrome bring to their communities.

Caley Versfelt is a photographer and actor with Down syndrome and, in celebration of World Down Syndrome Day, we asked her to photograph people with Down syndrome in her life that she admires for what they bring to the community.

Read on for an incredible snapshot of the big and small ways that people with Down syndrome can make our world a better place.

Elizabeth Wood — Age 30

Elizabeth enjoys dancing and her drama class. She loves to smile a lot when she is with her friends. Elizabeth said that her fun-loving attitude is one of the most important qualities that she brings to her community.

Sean McElwee — Age 24

Sean loves living independently in his own apartment. He current stars in the A&E show Born this Way where viewers can confirm that Sean always brings the party. He also brings a can-do attitude to everything he does, including his t-shirt line, Seanese. “Never give up on your dreams,” Sean says. “It could happen.”

Theresa Mabie — Age 20

Twenty-year-old Theresa likes talking on the phone and hanging out with her friends. When asked what she brings to her community, she said it’s her message that we should all be nice and respect each other. We couldn’t agree more!

Benjamin Golden — Age 24

Benjamin likes connecting with fellow Buddhists and working as a greeter at Lucky Brand. He has a very spontaneous personality and likes going to movies, listening to music, and dancing. Benjamin wants to make a difference in the world, so he makes a point to donate to organizations that keep our planet safe.

Jered Kozak — Age 28

Jered is an actor who loves making candles and soaps and working as a host a local Italian restaurant. He is loyal to the core, both as a friend and as a fan of the Oakland Raiders. Through everything that he does, Jered wants to make the world a happier place.

Miss Amazing is on a mission to provide opportunities for girls and women with disabilities, including those with Down syndrome, to build confidence and self-esteem. One way that we accomplish that mission is by amplifying the voices and stories of the girls and women that we serve.
