By: T. Habal
On Friday, the Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) released its memorandum order (MO) 2020–68 regarding the University of the Philippines Manila’s academic plans for the academic year (AY) 2020–2021.
Due to the pandemic, the University plans to adopt remote learning and/or the blending of remote and face-to-face learning. This includes asynchronous or non-real time communication & synchronous learning between teachers and learners. Blended learning will utilize online discussion boards (such as UVLE, VLE, Canvas, or Google Classroom) and teleconferencing platforms (such as Zoom or Google Meet) to conduct lectures, webinars and teleconferences.
The memo stated its plan to shorten both semesters into 14 weeks, wherein the first semester for AY 2020–2021 will open on September 10, 2020. It also discussed the university’s initiative on physical and academic infrastructure. This includes the use of ZOOM to supplement academic activities for both students and faculty, with consideration for those experiencing difficulty connecting to online platforms.
The memo also discussed collaboration between academic units to adjust the academic curricula for blended learning. Learning assistance grants, peer learning groups, and networks are set to support students. A students wellness system, network, help desk and guidance will also be provided to ensure the safety, health and dignity of students.
The university will have a dialogue with its constituent university and unit levels on Tuesday, 30 June, 2:00–5:00 PM via ZOOM. The UP Manila University Student Council (UPM USC) will also provide a livestream of the event on their Facebook and Twitter pages.
