On Aug 22nd of 2022, the popular text-to-image model ‘Stable Diffusion’ was released by Stability AI as an open source model. That now changes everything for AI Art tooling.

Stability AI did what Open AI was expected to do, which is provide a generative AI model free of use for anyone to view the code, download it and run a modified version on a personal computer.

This of course has created a lot of controversy, and many have regarded it as a reckless move.

We have already started to see AI image porn circulating the web and several Reddit forums had to be shut down. Violent graphic images of beaten Asian women showing up on social media feeds has forced Democratic representative Anna Eshoo to send a letter to federal regulators to crack down on open-source AI models.

But Emad Mostaque, the CEO of Stability AI has argued that it is extremely important that AI be democratized and untethered from corporate influence.

Do we really want Big Tech to privately own humanity’s most powerful invention of our time?

We've already seen how tech companies have used AI to monetize personal data for ad revenues. Do we really trust tech corporations for the betterment of humanity?
