While much of the world is still discovering what the blockchain technology can do, Blockchain Society hosted its first introductory event last Tuesday, February 20th with one heck of an attendance from the École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). Emie Lamoureux, our Public Relations Director, was there to see the one hour presentation, followed by a networking session, in all of their enthusiastic curiosity.

A few highlights from the event:

  • Over 50 students showed-up, with the majority studying in programming. Second, were finance students.
  • Gaspard Peduzzi, the BEN Region Head in Switzerland opened up an insightful, well-explained and detailed introductory presentation to the blockchain industry.

The presentation covered the following three main topics:

  1. Blockchain theory: Where it came from, definition, the “block”, transactions, immutability, consensus, important concepts

2. The Bitcoin Protocol: Definition and state, events and adoption, scaling and the second layer, Rootstock and Bitcoin script

3. Ethereum: The vision, On-chain smart contracts, tokens, ICOs, DAOs, applications, ecosystems

“When I asked what year the students were in, I was surprised to see so many of them were only in their second year and yet they showed so much interest in the blockchain industry. Most of them would say ‘We know it’s important to get involved as the industries we follow are talking about it.’” — Emie Lamoureux

It’s clear that the Blockchain Society is just getting started. If you’re curious about what to expect from them — a Blockchain Education Network (BEN) chapter based in Lausanne, Switzerland, we recommend you get in touch with Gaspard Peduzzi at gaspard.peduzzi@blockchainsociety.ch and join their slack channel here.
