We’re happy to announce that our first blockchain student certificate course, in collaboration with Blockchain at McGill, was a resounding success. The course was distributed in four two-hour sessions on campus at McGill over two weeks in October and was sold out — with 30 participants from universities across Montreal participating.

The course offered students a comprehensive look into the theoretical foundations of blockchain networks, and business use cases. Specifically, the sessions covered an introduction and history of blockchain, different blockchain networks (focusing on Bitcoin and Ethereum with a discussion of consensus and mining algorithms), cryptocurrency, and industry applications. After successful completion of the course, the 30 participants received MLG Blockchain Student Certification and every participant said they thought the course would help them find employment in the blockchain industry.

This pilot program was the first of a series of student-led blockchain courses that we’re planning to lead worldwide. As many of the founding team at MLG began their blockchain journey through groups like Blockchain at McGill, we want to continue to support these initiatives and provide them with the means to educate their peers. With the success of this first course, we’re optimistic about future courses and excited to spread blockchain knowledge to students globally.

The most popular topics of the course were consensus protocols and industry application, with lively discussions of each during the sessions. Based on feedback from participants, we will continue to add to the certificate course and potentially develop follow up courses and sessions. Most participants asked for more in-depth information on the technical side of blockchain, like developing and coding, and on the practical side, with more details about blockchain business processes and industry uses.

It is good to know that in such a nascent technology, there is so much interest from students. We hope that this course helps inform and inspire future blockchain enthusiasts, innovators, and more. We’re sure that many of the course participants will make their own contributions to the blockchain industry and inspire a better and more secure future for all of us.
