Population Shift

“I have no interest in motherhood. Not now, not ever.”

This is a stand-alone chapter in the Shift Work series.
Ivy is a high-end escort who, against her better judgment, began a relationship with a much older client, Tom, who is an ex-soldier and former Tory MP. Her judgment proved flawed, because he proved to be gentle and compassionate, and despite their differences she fell in love.
If you want to catch up on Ivy’s unorthodox romance, there’s a list at the end.

Two lines. Same as last time. And the first time. At least the other tests came back clear.

The probability of a condom failing is only one in fifty, but in my profession ‘fifty’ can be anything from a slow year to an extremely lucrative month. That’s why I also have an implant with a failure rate of one tenth of one percent, so I don’t need to worry about condoms breaking.

The chances of the implant and a condom failing, at the same time? One in fifty thousand. My body count is high, obviously, but it isn’t that high.

If only that was how statistics worked. The odds of winning the lottery are one in forty-five million… but most weeks, someone has a lucky ticket.
