Taking Comfort
Mmm Mondays News and Prompt #1
While doing the weekly shopping, I spotted an elderly man and woman holding hands. There’s something about seeing this that always pulls on my heartstrings. To know that there are those who can be together for countless years but still find pleasure in simply holding hands makes me fill with joy.
But there was something unique about this couple as well, and that was their comfort. Not only with each other, but in each other, too.
It was clear in the hand placed on a lower back, or the way they leaned into each other when they spoke. How they were always aware of the other’s location, even with their backs turned. And from across the room, how one would search for the other, making sure their eyes would meet, faces alighting with a smile.
I paused to watch them (rude, I know) and couldn’t help but wonder how long a marriage must last to take comfort in another like that.
As they passed by, I stopped them to mention my appreciation for their hand holding, especially in their advanced years.
They both smiled, but the husband looked at me, a twinkle in his eye, and said, “She grabbed my hand almost 60 years ago, I just never let go.”
