Listening to music is a way for me to enter new and unfamiliar worlds and get lost in them. Khronos

The Artistic Soul of Khronos

Meet Khronos, the Dutch artist whose journey into the world of drum and bass began during his teenage years within the walls of his childhood bedroom. Shifting his musical interests from Hardcore to The Prodigy, he quickly fell in love with the sounds of Sick Music, and artists such as Spor and Noisia. Khronos’s extensive track record is studded with releases on esteemed labels like Kosen Production, Genome Rec., Histeria Rec., Blackout, Ammunition Rec., Titan Rec., Neurofunk Grid, and Bad Taste Rec., solidifying his place in the drum and bass scene.

His latest EP, ‘Exile’, transcends the conventional format of music compilation, embodying a decade’s worth of thorough craftsmanship and boundary-pushing exploration in the genre. Released under the renowned Kosen Production, ‘Exile’ is not just an auditory experience; it’s a narrative of transformation, charting Khronos’s evolution from an emerging talent to a respected master in the drum and bass landscape.

As we sit down with Khronos, we embark on a journey into the facets of his personality that often remain hidden from the spotlight. We uncover what drives this artist to relentlessly chase the perfect beat, explore his unique experiences, what can get Khronos out of bed in the middle the night, and even learn about places where you can bump into him.

Without further ado, let’s dive right in 🤿.

There simply aren’t enough hours in a day.

Khronos honed his sound design skills at a dedicated school in Leeuwarden, The Netherlands, where he immersed himself in the art and complexities of audio creation. Khronos lives and breathes music every hour of the day. With a full-time gig as a composer, he crafts catchy jingles for radio stations worldwide. So, there’s a good chance you’ve been grooving to his tunes unknowingly during your daily routines.

In addition to his work as a composer, Khronos is deeply invested in his solo drum and bass project, which, let’s face it, is why we’re all buzzing here today 🐝. Parallel to this, he’s collaborating on another exciting venture, ANIMA, alongside his best friend, a fellow creative spirit he met back in sound design school. Together, they’re blending their talents to create something truly mystical.

Curious, I couldn’t resist asking, “Do you work on sounds all day, every day?” To which he casually replied, “Not really, I take breaks to play video games, too.”

If you were to meet Khronos in person, you’d discover that he tends to be on the quieter side. “I don’t really say a lot, maybe when I get a few beers I’d open my mouth a little bit more, but most of the times I’m quite quiet,” he admitted. This is an interesting paradox, considering that Khronos’s music is far from being quiet. “My mind is definitely not quiet, because it’s screaming a lot. I guess music is a good way to express it,” he said.

A Flight to Remember: Khronos’s First International Gig

We all have our fair share of nerve-wracking moments in life; it’s what reminds us of our humanity. Interestingly, these moments often serve as a bridge that strengthens connections between people. Khronos, too, has had his heart-pounding experiences in his journey as a musician. To forge a deeper connection, he reflected on his very first gig abroad.

“Back in 2015,” he began, “I was invited to play in the Storm Club, Prague, together with Emperor, AKOV and Innate MC,” he recounted. “My brother brought me to the airport from Sneek, it’s about one and a half hour drive,” he added. “At the airport, I went into the lobby, where you still have the opportunity to get a beer, so I immediately went to the bar to get a beer. I was waiting, waiting, drinking, drinking, and at some point I was waiting for something to happen, for people to start moving so I could follow the crowd to go to the airplane.”

“But nothing really happened, nothing was changing,” he continued. “Everybody seemed to be chilling their asses off. Little did I know, I had to go to what is called the gate. I did not know about gates at that time. It was actually the first time that I flew by myself. At some point I wanted to check what was going on. I went to this little corridor, and when I came closer I saw that it was not just a small corridor, it was a huge hall that leads you to the gates. I had 10 minutes to go, so I panicked. My heart started skipping.”

“I asked someone working there to point me into the right direction,” he said. “The person said to me that probably I was a little bit late and there was a very small chance that my plane would still be there. After I realised that I missed my flight I immediately called one of the agents from Neurofunk Grid — that’s who I partnered with back then — and they were of course surprised,” he chuckled. “So I told them that I fucked up and that I still really wanted to go there, and maybe I could just sacrifice my fee for another flight.”

In the end, Khronos decided to purchase a new, albeit significantly expensive flight ticket out of his own pocket. He eventually received his fee, which helped offset some of the cost of the flight. However, he admits that the finer details are now a bit hazy in his memory. What mattered most was that he successfully made it to the Storm Club for his first gig.

“A big shout out to the organisers of Neurofunk Will Never Die for giving me the opportunity to fuck up and still get to play there,” he concluded with a grateful smile.

Gaming: A Muse for Khronos

Speaking of dedication, one of Khronos’s unexpected sources of inspiration comes from the world of video games. Among Khronos’s dedicated fanbase, there’s no shortage of humour when it comes to leaving comments on his tracks. One memorable comment that Khronos fondly recalls goes like this:

“I came for Diablo lore, I stayed for some awesome music.”

It wasn’t until later in his life that Khronos realised the significant role that sounds, atmospheres, and music played in his immersion while playing video games. He could lose himself in gaming for up to 14 hours, yet it would feel as if only two hours had passed by.

“Sounds, atmosphere and music play such a big role in getting hypnotised by games, because we all get hypnotised when we play our favourite video games 🌀,” he said.

Khronos firmly believes that music plays a substantial role in this phenomenon, even though the music you hear in games is entirely different from what you’d experience in clubs. “I’m inspired by the total picture — the story, the music, the game play, the visuals,” he added.

This sense of hypnosis also envelops Khronos during his creative process. “All of a sudden it’s the dinner time, or you realise you skipped dinner because you were busy in your own little world and the process. And then your girlfriend gets angry because there’s no food on the table and it was your turn to cook 👨‍🍳 ,” he chuckled.

The Simple Joys of Kapsalon

When you ask someone what would make them jump out of bed in the middle of the night, you get a glimpse into their quirks and desires. So, what’s Khronos’ midnight motivation? Well, it’s a simple word that lights up his eyes: “Kapsalon!”

A proper Kapsalon, with high-quality fresh meat, salad and perfectly fried potatoes or fries, is his absolute delight. “When it’s properly made, it’s a heaven,” he mused with a dreamy smile. It’s moments like these that remind us how the simple pleasures in life can bring the most joy.

And Kapsalon concludes our brief conversation with Khronos. Be sure to grab his latest EP, immerse yourself in the captivating sounds he has thoroughly crafted, and give him a well-deserved thumbs up, because he truly deserves it.

MMNTM is grateful for the opportunity to delve into the world of this unique artist, uncovering some of his less-known personality traits, awkward experiences and surprising sources of inspiration.
