Deep in the ocean, there is an island, where no one lives anymore. There are some old, now unused buildings here and there, mostly damaged by war and tooth of time.

Most of them have some military background, so the whole island was probably some testing facility of some kind.

You have been washed up from the ocean to a beach, without anything but a strong will to survive. Upon looking around you could see that you are not alone.

There are also other people, all naked like you. And some of these people are now taking a rock from the ground and running towards you. Their intentions are clear. Will you fight or try to run away?

Pure PvP with bits of a PvE

The Rust is an online competitive MMO game with a strong accent on PvP gameplay.

The main threat and the main content you will encounter are PvP activities tied to fighting with rival players, raiding their bases, and protecting your own against their raids on your property.

Are you ready to compete against other players 24/7? Even if you are offline your stuff is not safe, with the right equipment anyone could breach into your place and borrow what they like.

Playing as Solo

You can play the game in a group or as a solo player. I usually play solo, so most of the experience I get in this game is from this mode.

It is very well playable this way, you just need to count on fact that you could encounter groups of rival players, so it could be more difficult to survive. But it is not unrealistic.

As you will be building your own base where you can heal yourself and store loot you will find as a single player you will probably build just a small base, large enough just for you.

If you will be playing in a group, your base will probably be larger, and such it could look like a more lucrative target for enemy raids. Yup, you are nowhere fully safe in this game.

The base here, another there, bases everywhere

The fundamental part of the game is base building. You will need to gather some basic materials like wood, stone or iron, find some suitable place and build some walls to protect your belongings and yourself.

You can equip your base with various pieces of furniture. You will need storage for your loot, a crafting bench for, err, crafting, some doors and locks to protect it all from others.

There is a large variety of what you could add to your base. Something is purely cosmetical while others items have some added value. Wanna protect your doors a little more? An automatic shotgun turret could be an answer.

You are limited by how big your base could be with upkeep — every bit you add to your base will consume some of the basic materials like the fuel is consumed in generators.

If are the materials missing your base will decay, lose its integrity and eventually fall apart. So, you are forced to build reasonable bases, or you will lock yourself in a harvesting loot for materials to just keep your base up.

Officials and community servers, regular wipes

There are some servers with strict rules, managed by game developers. Anyone can play there if there are some free slots on them. And there are also community servers with custom rules managed by players themselves.

For some, it will be better to play on official ones, for some on community servers. For new players, it is recommended to look for community servers with a lower population limit marked as newbie-friendly.

There are usually some protective rules, so you could learn the game a little bit before you jump into the wild world of true challenge.

The servers, either official or community, are regularly wiped. It depends on the server, but it could be an interval of one to several weeks (and maybe even months).

The wipes will wipe almost all progress that players have done in a particular world, allowing them to start fresh and with the same conditions for everyone. Wipes are essential for the game loop, as after some time the progress in getting new loot and building bases will stall.

Ah, this community

So, you never heard about the Rust community? Someone could describe it as the most hostile, toxic, and unfriendly community any game ever had. You will encounter people who will camp on the roof of your base and kill you on sight without any obvious reason.

If you stream the game you will encounter stream snipers. People will pretend to be friendly just to steal your stuff in the blink of an eye. One needs to be prepared for such behavior and never should trust anyone in this game.

On the other hand, you could also find very friendly players around, even though it is not that common. Trust needs to be earned in this game.

Conclusion

Rust is one of my favorite competitive computer games. It could be a lot of fun same as a lot of frustration.

One could spend several hours in pure happiness how everything is going well and lose it in a few minutes. It’s hard, it is not for everyone but if you like competitive survival games where the base building is a large part of the game give it a try.
