This publication explores the origins, current applications and future roles of mobile 3D scanning technology.

A Foreword from our 3D Experts

If you haven’t heard of Mobile 3D Scanning yet, you probably don’t work in the field of computer vision. This stealthy technology has been a quiet but powerful contributor to the tech revolution we’re currently experiencing. In the past, 3D scanners were primarily the province of large corporations and entities, with the resources and space to afford expensive, room-sized scanners. Thanks to diligent R&D efforts that have led to great leaps in progress, that reality is changing, day by day.

In the past 5–10 years, we’ve already seen a dramatic decrease in the size of 3D scanners; today, they’re present as tablets or as add-on devices for your smartphone or gaming console. The camera technology that allows 3D scanning to happen has been largely popularized by Microsoft Kinect; tomorrow, it will become a part of your smartphone, unnoticeable except as just another camera.

Soon enough, the capacity to create 3D scans will be ubiquitous — we’ll all have access to the technology and the wave of information, products, and services it brings, stored neatly in our pockets.

Our Vision

We at Knockout Concepts fervently believe that the coming ubiquity of 3D scanning can serve to better people’s lives — in sports, in medicine, in education, just to name a few. We have a vision of 3D scanning as a powerful mobile tool for improving the world around us, and we want to share our vision through this publication: The Mobile 3D Scanning channel is intended to inform the world about how we can take advantage of this massive leap to advance human welfare. We want this publication to serve as a resource that provides the latest knowledge and news — curated by 3D experts — about advances in 3D scanning technology and how that technology can be applied.

The Mobile 3D Scanning channel is divided into four sections:

News covers the latest and greatest in the 3D scanning space, ranging from advances in camera technology and computer vision to releases of new devices.

Stories present firsthand accounts on how 3D scanning has been used to better the world around us. These narratives serve both as a record of what has been done, and as a harbinger of what will be done — a testament to the powerful potential of 3D scanning in the years to come.

Features serve up longer-form articles centered on our vision of the future — of how mobile 3D scanning can and will change the world, in design, in education, in sports, in healthcare, and in so many more areas.

Resources educate and inform those who want to take a closer look at the concepts that underlie 3D scanning — how and why it works. We provide explanations of both software and hardware, and some tips on how to get the most out of the technology.
