2016: What a Year!
2016 was a banner year for Magpi. We added tens of thousands of new users — and many new Case Studies. Just a couple of favorites (click on either to read more):
Great New Features
Of course, the great work being done by Magpi users in the field is the point of the work that the Magpi team does behind the scenes, and also the source of many, many good ideas: from little tweaks to the Magpi user interface to major feature ideas. And we added some amazing features, for sure:

1 — reports — after years of advising folks to just export their data in order to create reports, we added Magpi Reports, which lets our paying users create beautiful, secure, real-time reports and data visualizations incorporating graphs, charts, maps, and anything from online (YouTube videos, Slideshare presentations, Google Calendars, etc). 2 — Zapier integration — another giant step forward! Now Magpi users can, without programming, connect their Magpi data to almost any other web application. Have incoming data trigger SMS messages. Or create calendar appointments. Or copy your data automatically into Salesforce or Google Sheets or Excel 365. So many possibilities, it’s amazing. We love, love, love Zapier, and we’re happy to say the feeling is mutual: “Magpi makes it really easy,” says their review. We couldn’t agree more. Read more here.
3 — IVR (interactive voice response data collection) — building on the success of our interactive SMS feature for collecting rich, high-quality data via SMS “chat”, in 2016 we introduced our first IVR product. This allows Magpi users to deploy forms as phone calls, in which the questions are read to the respondent, and they answer the questions by entering single-digit numbers (we’ll be expanding response options soon). By extending remote data collection even to illiterate respondents, this should enable our users to continue to get more data but at a lower cost than expensive field surveys. 4 — Subaccounts — last but not least, in 2016 Magpi introduced the concept of enterprise management, with “subaccounts”: accounts that are connected to another, central account. An example could be a large organization with numerous country offices. A single Enterprise account with Magpi can invite any other Magpi user (even free users) to be a subaccount. This means that the subaccount data collection is billed centrally, to the Enterprise account, and there are other benefits as well, as shown in the slide below. Read more about subaccounts here.
2017: More to Come
In 2017, we’re excited that we’ll be introducing many, many new features and enhancements. We don’t want to give away the surprise, but you can count on a few things:
- Magpi integration mobile money
- useful new data types like barcodes and signatures
- multiple new question types
- a brand new interface for our mobile apps that allows easy collection of longitudinal data
And maybe even advanced artificial intelligence (we’re sworn to secrecy on this one). So thanks for being a Magpi fan, and stay tuned. We’ll continue to put all our effort into making Magpi work for you!
