What is Periscope Community Summit?

“Periscope Summit is the next SXSW!”

Robert Scoble said prior to deciding to be involved as a speaker. After considering that it’s a great kick-off to his birthday weekend he went all in.

“Watch out VidCon”

PC Mag said in a recent article that showcased many speakers from the NY Event. Dan Moore • Blogger was, as always heavily featured along with mentions of Brian Fanzo @iSocialFanz. These people are quickly becoming the rockstars of a new media.

The user generated event itself is an amalgam of Vidcon, SXSW, Social Media Week, summer camp and high school reunion.

After the smashing success of the first event in New York from September 22–24th it’s interesting to look back and see what happened. Periscope Summit’s hashtag #PeriscopeSummit (yeah… easy to remember) trended during it’s first event in NY and really… it shouldn’t have happened.

  1. #PeriscopeSummit is WAY too long of a hashtag
  2. The Pope was in town
  3. There were less than 500 attendees
  4. ZERO plans/strategy to trend

But it happened...

And here’s why:

Periscope is the most powerful and engaging app in the world and, at it’s core, has the organic ability to bring people together.

As a social media app the growth rate is insane. With 10M+ downloads in it’s first 7 months it beats out Instagram, Facebook, and Vine on the same timeline.

What’s amazing about this is that we are still in the early adoption phase. Take a moment to imagine if some of the original content creators from YouTube got together to celebrate and make content during the infancy of the platform…

now imagine that they’re making the content together…

now imagine that the event is being filmed for a documentary…

And now…

Imagine that they’re all friends.

@tabasum @Ryan_A_Bell @saverome Alex Khan — These look like real friends, right? Yep. Real friends.

Periscope Community Summit is the beautiful stepchild of a social media culture based around social good (like #ScopeForGood & #SkipForGood), music, technology and entertainment. It is 100% funded and built by the people that love it and the early adopting brands that have connected to it’s first creators(thanks to @SanDisk @TMobile Krue & friends!)

And yes, a documentary is being filmed about this first year of Periscope and will culminate at the SF event. START BROADCAST has a gofundme account and has filmed Periscope stars throughout the world. Check them out by clicking HERE.

The Format

Summits occur 2 times per year in America. There is an East Coast Summit (already took over NY) in the middle of the year, a West Coast Summit at the end of the year (January 14–17th in SF. CLICK FOR TICKETS HERE) and one special “See Our World” event at a special location (think destination wedding).

The San Francisco event will be massive. Our friends from @Twitter and Periscope will be there along with press, talent managers, musicians, secret guests, VC’s, actors, comedians, social media experts, philanthropists, CEO’s…

…pretty much people that you want to be around is what we’re getting at here.

Thursday:

The event will start with an opening celebration on Thursday night in the ballroom of Park Central SF. It will have DJ’s, drinks, selfies, scopes and all of the external meeting spaces will be set up for lounging, charging, schmoozing and streaming.

Friday:

We stay up late so we start late. This isn’t a job event so if you wear a tie you’re gonna look like a doofus. Don’t do it. There will be morning events for the early birds like yoga, runs, electric scooter rides and runs. Then the show starts at 9AM with keynotes and ScopeTalks (think TED Talks). We take a long lunch and then have the choices of Master Classes, workshops and other content.

At night we’ll have a talent show hosted by a comedian or two that we can’t name quite yet. All of our attendees will be able to sign up and names will be pulled from a hat (#SFOldTech).

Saturday:

Pretty similar format but we’ll end with a VERY amazing music celebration sponsored by Krue, a new engaged broadcasting platform for musicians and music fans, that will BLOW your mind.

Sunday:

So yeah, by this time you’ve basically not slept for 3 days but we’re pushing through with more content, people visiting via the big screen from all over the world, there are talks about breaking Guinness records, Q&A’s and break out sessions.

One of my favorite moments from NY was when the wonderfully talented Periscope Community Manager Lili was doing a private scope to Periscope HQ and telling me that Kayvon Beykpour the CEO was having “serious FOMO.”

If you’re an influencer you need to get onboard. If you’re a brand you need to check this out. If you’re a fan you need to come and have fun. If you don’t come you’re going to miss out. Don’t have MO.
