Entrepreneurship is important and downright critical for success in today’s journalism world, according to Retha Hill, executive director of the Digital Innovation and Entrepreneurship Lab at Arizona State University and final keynote speaker at the Mobile Me and You conference.

Journalists need to keep moving forward to evolve, she said. The news industry is struggling and needs help with cultivating change — and that is where entrepreneurs come into play. She sees her role as helping journalists grow so they can envision what that future may look like.

After Hill’s keynote, Nicole Kraft, assistant professor of journalism at Ohio State University, presented her research on how using a single digital media component helps students learn and produce projects faster. She taught a class in which every student did their work on an iPad. Throughout the class, she said she learned the students are not native to digital media. When the projects got rough, they went back to laptops but they did learn quicker and were able to produce pieces quickly, she said.
