Mobile Me & You Project (Gaming Community) Part V | “New Consumer Trends”- “Mobile Reputations” course | Panteion university

In a world that is constantly changing new trends are taking place. In the frame of our course “Mobile Reputations”, we, as students of the Panteion University, run a qualitative research in order to examine the use of mobile phones by Millennials. More specific we decided to focus on the gaming community and we managed to interview 12 persons, in order to meet the needs of our project.

Moving on we are going to talk to you about Alexis Machairas, who is 23 years old and works as a baker. At first, we will discover how he uses his mobile phone daily and after that the kind of gamer that he is.

So, let’s start with some facts. He spends around 4 or 5 hours per day on his phone, facing it like a gadget of multiple use. First of all, he likes scrolling on social media and communicating with his friends. He prefers Facebook for being informed about the news and Instagram for being informed about his friends’ life. He doesn’t share the belief that Facebook is going down, as he uses it as much as before. Some of the influencers he follows on these platforms are Fanis Lampropoulos (comedian) and CZN Burak (chef). The first one fascinates him with his humor, while the latter inspires him with ideas about cooking. He almost daily produces content by sharing songs or funny videos, as well as by uploading personal photos. He also uses some photo editing apps, like instasize, in order to make his photos more awesome. Other apps that he finds useful in his routine are the alarm clock, because he needs to wake up early in the morning, and the calendar in order to schedule his tasks. He also uses apps for travelling that make his life a lot easier, as tickets and rooms are booked in seconds. Some of them are Trivago, Viva and Booking. At last, he uses his mobile phone for online shopping of clothes and shoes from famous platforms, like Skroutz. If he couldn’t have his phone, he would definitely feel lost.

But what about gaming? Let’s focus on this part of the story. Alexis devotes around 5 to 6 hours per day on playing games (only 1 hour of them on mobile gaming). At the time he plays the strategic game World of Warecraft and two war games:

· Unknown Players Battlegrounds

· Fortnite

He prefers playing them on a computer or PlayStation, because as he says it’s easier for him to listen to music and operate Facebook at the same time. Except for that, he prefers games on a computer, since, according to him, graphics are better by far. For example, Unknown Players Battle Grounds is a game that he plays in both computer and mobile phone, but in the latter, it doesn’t find it as interested as in the other gadget, due to its low-quality graphics. So, he thinks that mobile games from Play store are supposed to be bad copies of the original games played on other gadgets. Therefore, he will resort to his phone only when being outside of the house. At least he admits that: games can be portable in that way. He claims that he is part of the community of gamers, as apart from just playing games he also watches streaming. Two of his beloved gamers are Shroud and Ninja and through them he can learn new strategic tactics and get informed about famous video-games. He likes watching others, but he doesn’t share his own content on gaming platforms. In addition, in our discussion if he thinks of gaming as a profession, he responded: “I am playing just for fun, not for making profit of it”

I think we learnt everything we wanted so, it is time to close this interview. Alexis Machairas gave as a complete idea of his life concerning gaming and why his mobile phone can be a part of it or not. Heads up and we go for our next interview.
