For this course of Mobile Reputations Collaborative Consumption in Sharing Economy, we were challenged by our coordinator Betty Tsakarestou to find out what are some significant insights concerning the relationship between Millennials and their mobile phones.

Our team started off by sharing some of our own habits and then continued by doing some research about the habits of two of our friends, an Aussie in Paris and an Ecuadorian in Castellon de la Plana. We realised that the differences were not that big. The only that we noticed and marked as more significant than the others is the fact that each one of us tend to use our phones in a rather personalized way. For example, our Ecuadorian friend belongs to the 80s. He uses his phone mostly to chat and keep in touch with his long distance friends. He always looks for good music on YouTube and Bandcamp and surfs the web to find record sales.

The only difference between our case studies and us was the different apps that might be used at different countries around the globe. Our Chinese friend told us that he uses WeChat for messaging and DiDi chuxing for calling a cab. But after all, we all check Instagram and our e-mail first thing in the morning. Facebook is useful just for group chats, along with Whats App.

The average millennial uses his/her phone approximately 20 hours/week. Some of the main categories of this use are: Social Networking, Creativity, Transportation, Well-being, Productivity.

Finally, we found out that we crave experiences and finding a creative output through our phones. And this is basically the reason why the use we make out of this relationship with our phone is personalized. We are all the same but different. We are somewhat connected, not to say addicted to our phones. Our phone is our calendar, our alarm clock, notebook, mp3 player, camera, map, work or uni tool… Despite the personalized, the active or passive use, we all “build a small world” of our own out of this relationship we have with our phones.
