In the context of our mobile reputations of sharing economy and collaborative consumption course we were asked by our coordinator Mrs Betty Tsakarestou to examine millennials’ behaviors and their relationship with their mobile phones on a daily basis. Some of the topics that we had to put under the microscope were the time their screen time, their mobile habits, their favorite and most used apps and whether their mobile phones are their personal assistants as well.

After presenting our own behavior, our friends’ habits and some global case studies, we choose to further examine a specific target group, a community. We decided to interview Millennials that might use their mobile phones’ services and the possibilities they offer as a creative output. John was one of them.

John is 23 years old commercial photographer who is studying photography at IEK AKMI. He uses his phone around 6 hours per day. His favorite apps are Instagram, VSCO and YouTube, while his most used apps are Instagram messenger and YouTube. When he wakes up he checks his Instagram feed and notifications and YouTube to listen to music or watch standup comedy videos. Generally he does everything through his phone except from editing his photos, using lightroom on his laptop. However if we took his phone just for a day he wouldn’t really mind.

When it comes to his work he uses his phone to communicate and book some jobs and to promote his photos on social media. He doesn’t use his phone neither for transportation nor for his university, except from checking his e-mails now and then.

Ηe uses Google drive to have access to his photos while on his phone as well. He prefers using his phone than using his laptop and now that his laptop is broken he uses lightroom and Photoshop on his phone.

On Instagram he uploads stories to promote his commercial photo shootings but he posts more editorial and aesthetically satisfying photos. On Facebook he has a personal profile where he posts songs and he promotes the events and parties he’s a photographer at and he also has a professional page where he posts his conceptual photos. His only chat application is messenger but even chatting for him happens on Instagram.

Using his phone he feels connected, because he doesn’t turn use to abuse. When he’s out with friends, he doesn’t even check his phone but he always asks for the WI-FI password.

He hasn’t and doesn’t use any sharing platforms, because his lifestyle does not demand to, but if he had to he would.

He does not follow any influencers and even though he understands their job he doesn’t really appreciate or believe this concept of work. He rarely buys something online but he has purchased some clothing and photography gear.

Editing-wise, he uses VSCO, Lightroom and Photoshop on his phone but he wouldn’t ever pay for an app. He only uses his phone camera to upload a story. He doesn’t follow and doesn’t belong in any editing community even though he believes editing is really important. He thinks that using boarders and different color pallets one can find his trademark style. Finally he thinks that someone that hasn’t any clue about photography could learn the basics and find his own character.
