After our pilot interview for the course of Mobile Reputations, Collaborative Consumption in Sharing Economy, coordinated by Mrs. Betty Tsakarestou, we interviewed a photographer and friend of ours, Jo.

Jo is 22 years old, she’s an ASFA student and works as a photographer and social media manager. She uses her phone quite a lot, up to 8 hours per day.

First thing she checks in the morning is her Instagram account and feed. She checks her e-mails only if she knows something important might come up. When it comes to Facebook, she checks her feed only if she’s really bored or if she wants to find events she’s interested in. While working she’s always on her phone, stalking other photographers’ profiles on Instagram to get inspired and doing some posts.

If we took her phone away from her, she would definitely miss it but she wouldn’t die without it. She has done it before, live several days without her phone, just to relax and she would do it again. But she wouldn’t chose to so so. She does NOT use her phone as her personal assistant. She prefers to have an actual notebook or calendar/agenda. She prefers her phone over other devices (ex. her computer).

Like most of the Millennials, she also uses her phone as a tool. When it comes to her job, she manages the Instagram and Facebook page of her boss. Concerning her university, she checks her e-mails, uni news and her grades via her phone. Finally, she uses Beat, the OASA app and Google maps for transportation. However, she hasn’t used a sharing services platform (ex. Airbnb), even though she would be into trying couch surfing.

Her favorite social medium is Instagram. She posts a photo every 3 days to boost the views, reach and engagement of her posts and profile. She loves stories but mainly to be and seem active and promote her work. She only posts on Facebook to promote her work (seminars, events etc.). However, she uses Messenger a lot (her only chatting app), for team chats as well. She has Pinterest and Tumblr accounts.

“Who uses Snapchat nowadays?”

She tells us “when I’m out with friends I might upload a story or two but I don’t have my phone in hand”. She’s part of the Strap-on Unicorns and the Phaenography community. We could say she’s generally a member of the party/events photographers community of Athens. She likes the fact that she can promote her work this way, she is proud of being part of these communities but she wouldn’t say she’s overexcited. If she doesn’t leave her house she might chat with her friends but she doesn’t feel connected that way.She prefers the face to face interaction.

She doesn’t follow any influencers right now. She used to follow Venetia Kamara and Mairiboo (Mary Sinatsaki) but she doesn’t like the constant spamming. She thinks that more of the stuff they post -if not all of them- are totally fake and they promote meaningless parts of life. She gets the fact that it’s their job but she doesn’t like it. She doesn’t like buying things online and she even used to be afraid of it. She would pay for a premium Spotify account, maybe VSCO. She pays for the Beat and e-food services.

Her close friends have the same habits as her. Her best friend didn’t even own a smartphone coz she simply didn’t want to. They don’t really care tbh. However, she strongly believes that our generation is highly addicted.

We always carry with us chargers, power banks, chargers for the power banks…

Her most used apps are Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, Drive, VSCO and Preview, while her favorite apps are Instagram, Pinterest, Spotify and HUJI. She only uses VSCO as an editing app, but she prefers Photoshop. She believes if someone wants to learn the basics, it might be possible via editing apps.
