“Mobile Me & You Project” | “New Consumer Trends” — “Mobile Reputations” Course |Panteion University

We are students from Panteion university and this is a research we conducted about how millennials uses their mobile phone daily. We were motivated in making this project by AD&PR lab and our tutor miss Tsakarestou

Our research began by analyzing first ourselves, as we are all having an affair with our mobile phone. Between the three of us we noticed a lot of similarities and a few differences. More specifically, 2 of us set as at the top of their list the social media applications, such as Facebook, Messenger, Viber and Instagram, while the third one prefers apps concerning mobile games. Two of them are Twitch and PUBG. Of course YouTube is one of the most favorite applications we all use, since we can have immediate access to every video that have ever been uploaded on internet just with the top of our fingers. Overall, we also have a common point. We all use our phone around 5 hours per day.

Continuing to our research, we resort to our circle of friends to ask them about their mobile use. We interviewed two millennials who are always with their smartphones on their hand and we wanted to discover the reasons why. We concluded that both of them make extreme use of Instagram. We wouldn’t say that they are addicted to it, but they are surely attracted by the trend of uploading their favorite stories and personal moments. Except for Instagram and other social media that both of them are using at a great degree, one of them also loves using photo edit app. Two of them are Vsco and Snapseed and she is using them either for uploading awesome content on Instagram or just for hobby. They also use work out apps, like Keep Yoga or Keep Training, and apps of telephone companies, such as Cosmote What’s up.

Last but not least, to broaden our horizons concerning the mobile use that is being made globally, we asked two girls we found from our friend in Erasmus. The first one is from Ukraine and the other one from Kazakstan. Both of them are using social media, but they express a preference for WhatsApp and Telegram, instead of using Viber or Messenger. From our conversation in class we were also informed and we searched about a social medium mainly being used in China, which is Wechat. What’s more, they also take advantage of their phone for paying bills through applications, like ForteBank or myHalyk, comparing to most people in Greece, who are more hesitant concerning such applications. Of course, apart from these applications we all make use of maps, translator, alarm clock and apps regarding transportation to each region and country.

To sum up, we figured out through our interviews that all millennials check their social media accounts during the day, especially when they wake up in the morning and before go to sleep at night. We see through this that we always want to feel connected in a way. Apart from entertainment, everyone has transformed mobile phone to a digital personal assistant who makes our life a lot easier. For example, not only we organize better our routine without losing a bus, but they also help us feel safer when being in an unknown region or when travelling. Therefore, we concluded that apps of a smartphone reflect the character of the owner. We can see their hobbies or who is interested in his wellbeing. More specific, most people that like gymnastic choose to have a personal fitness instructor on their pocket.

Through this project we managed to learn a lot about how millennials use their mobile phone and gain a deeper knowledge on our behaviour. Thank you Miss Betty Tsakarestou.
