In the framework of the course “Mobile Reputations Collaborative Consumption in Sharing Economy”, taught by Betty Tsakarestou, we took up a research project regarding the relationship millennials have with their phones. We interviewed peers who study in Greece and abroad and we started to gather information for our “Mobile Me — Global” assignment. Thus we were able to draw some conclusions and each team came up with specific insights. Then, we partnered with another team and combined our insights into one big canvas.

Both our teams and the students we interviewed agreed on our love for visuals. It appears that Millennials have a bit of a love story with Instagram and we prefer to share our stories with the world using photos and videos as opposed to the more static and plain text format. Together with the countless editing tools that are available and apps like Pinterest and Youtube, we are able to focus on our personal branding and explore the creative output of mobile usage.

Our generation also seems to be very attached to the notion of the community. We all use different social media apps like Messenger, Whatsapp and Viber to connect with the world and express ourselves and share our interests and passions with the world. It is the sense of belonging and sharing that we are all so persistently seeking.

We also came to the conclusion that Millennials are rather interested in their well-being. This might include their work outs, their fitness, their nutrition and their diet. They have a cocktail of relevant apps in their phones such as NTC, Runtastic, Headspace, My Fitness Pal etc. They also use iPhone’s Health app and females tend to track their period with the help of their period calendar app.

This last fact brings us to another realization of ours. We absolutely love to use our phones to make our lives easier and to cope with everyday life much more quickly. We turn our phones into our little assistants that help us to be productive every single day. These little assistants might take over the role of our calendar, our notebook, our to do lists, our online storage unit (Dropbox/Google Drive), our uni and work tool and of course our e-mail “warehouse”.

Finally, we conclude to the fact that we, Millennials, have a very special, creative, productive, addictive, useful, personalized relationship with our phones. We cannot imagine life without them and frankly, we don’t want to. We build a small world, a small life around this relationship a we certainly make the most out of it every day.
