April 29 “Cracker Jack replaces beloved plastic toys with QR codes and a ‘mobile experience’ ”- Cracker Jack has replaced its beloved Prize Inside toys with a link to baseball-themed games for mobile devices. This is the new Cracker Jack experience, just in time for another season of America’s favorite pastime. The nearly 125-year-old product has opted to replace its Prize Inside with a surprise more worthy of the 21st century. From now on, Cracker Jack consumers with find a QR code inside the small prize that links to four mobile, baseball-themed games.

Feb. 17 “Streaming wars: Pandora vs. Spotify” — Pandora does not have the type of global reach of key rival Spotify (being only officially available in 3 markets). Across all the major age breaks, Pandora is ahead of Spotify by a significant margin. And its appeal to older age groups stands out here, with online 45–64s being 3x as likely to be using Pandora as Spotify. Like most music streaming sites, Pandora’s challenge lies in monetizing this user base. But its success in gathering a broad listener base certainly gives it a lot of potential.

Sept. 10 Mobile app use surpasses TV viewing— Americans are spending 198 minutes per day using mobile applications this year, compared with 168 minutes watching television, according to Flurry. The report also showed that entertainment and content apps are breaking into top-grossing charts, with Netflix, Pandora and HBO Now among those highlighted.
