If you are lucky enough to have a garden, don’t let it go to waste. Don’t just leave the grass to overgrow and let the only colour be green — do something with it. This is your blank canvas to create your own little world in the wilderness.

Some gardens are secluded by trees; others are open with low fences, additionally having an unavoidable glimpse into your neighbour’s garden and conversations. I’ve lived in both, and it all comes down to how much you like your privacy when choosing between the two. It also depends on how fond you are of your neighbours; if you’re a chatterbox and wish to gab away on warm sunny days and the thought of your neighbours overhearing doesn’t feel you with dread, a lack of trees won’t be a problem. These are all things you have to keep in mind.

The thing with gardens is that you take it as it is and you can transform its current state into something a whole lot more. What you give is what you get, as the saying goes. Forgetting about the size, the shape and the surroundings of your garden, you can make your garden look how you have always wanted. Lanterns, outside candles, fairy lights, dining tables and chairs, sunbeds, parasols, plant pots, and the list goes on and on.

Choosing the right garden furniture can put a halt to your transformation, as there’s so much choice. First you have to choose your material — rattan, metal or wood or a combination? Originally, rattan garden furniture would not have lasted through the wetter seasons, however that was back when rattan first came to life as furniture in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Now waterproof rattan furniture is available, resistant to rain and is a promising material to use for durability. Rattan furniture is also ideal if you like the modern look but also still crave comfort. With its bouncy material and classic style of comfy cushions, this is a great choice.

Just as durable is metal. Rain will not be a problem in terms of breakage of the furniture as metal is the sturdiest of all materials; however you should be aware of the possibility of rusting. To avoid this, a lot of maintenance is required, unless you want your garden to look uncomplete and shabby.

Wood furniture comes in all different designs, which is what make this material so appealing — however, repainting of the wood with a multi-surface primer will be required to assure your furniture stays strong and in good condition.

Next, the type of furniture you choose for your garden. If you have a big sized garden, the world of furniture is your oyster — get yourself every piece of furniture you can think of. If your garden is on the smaller side, you’re going to have to think about this in a more tactical manner. Are you a lounger and lover of the sun? A sunbed or a daybed. Or are you a foodie? Would you have a barbeque every day of your life if the sun always shone? A dining table. Lazy too, or just like the finer things in life? This rattan firepit dining table set will make you feel like your garden is your kingdom.

So whether you have just moved into a new home and you are already thinking about your new garden or you’ve had the same garden for years but the chairs are rotting, the plants are dying and the whole atmosphere feels more derelict and empty than homely and full of nature, this is your starting point to beginning your garden revamp.
