The Rules of Summer

August is here and all of a sudden we are all trying to cram everything summer related into one single month, because we all know that August is the last official summer month and we haven’t been making the most of the season. In our defence, the weather hasn’t exactly allowed us to fulfil it in the previous summer months of June and July, and it may be raining today, but my hopes are set high on the weather giving us some sun and shine this month. I am rarely one to trust weather forecasts, but lately I have become somewhat addicted to checking the forecast day in day out. I can finally understand why my sister has been doing this for as long as I can remember. If the forecast isn’t lying, we can all look forward to a weekend of sun. As long as you can get past the drizzly weekdays, especially in your in the North, you will be rewarded with the sun come Friday.

There is no need to waste a more than adequate day by waking up late and dozing around the house like a zombie. You may have had a stressful, long and busy week, but you’ll feel better if you appreciate the fresh air and plan your days so they are action-packed and full of things to keep your body and mind both happy and healthy.

To make sure you haven’t watched summer pass you by in the blink of an eye without actually getting anything done, follow these steps. It’s not too late yet.

Wake up early. Not so early where you can’t keep your eyes open when you turn on the bathroom light when you go to brush your teeth. If you’re not a natural early riser, a 6 am wake up will likely require a 2 pm nap, which isn’t necessary. We’re in England, not Spain — we don’t require siestas. Any time before 9 am should work for most if you have had a peaceful, uninterrupted sleep the night before.

Go for a run. You don’t need to be a runner to run. All you need is some land — a park, a pavement, a nature reserve, a hill — and you can run until your heart’s content. Run for the right reasons, not the wrong. Don’t run because you want to eat the entire uncut cake waiting for you in the fridge. Run to exercise your brain, and this in turn will exercise your body. They work hand in hand, and beginning the day with a run will energise you for the whole day. Anything as short as 20 minutes will give you the boost you need to enjoy the day ahead.

Find something interesting to do. Whether it’s playing with your kids in the garden, putting on a talent show for them and their friends, or venturing outside your immediate surroundings to a beer garden, or a nearby lake, there is always something more exciting than watching television or sunbathing in silence. All it takes is a little imagination.

So check your forecast and keep a mental note of the next sunny day. Don’t let this one skip you by like the rest have. Before you know it, you’ll be waking up to the darkness of winter and you’ll regret the brightness of the summer mornings. With these 3 simple steps, you’ll make up for the whole season of summer in one day.
