A new survey ranking countries like we rank football teams, movies, and pies today shows a concerning trend on American’s views of the world. What this means for international business and trade.

Overview

Quick. What’s your favorite country? If you said the United States, you would be among the vast majority of Americans (78%) who named their home country as their fave in a recent survey. Now if you think, “Well, doesn’t everyone think their country is the best?” — well, you would be mistaken. Around the world, many do name a country other than their own as their favorite nation — and yes, many do still name the United States.

Of course, one of the great hallmarks of our country is the freedom to dissent — and to not believe that your country is the best (as the famous scene from “The Newsroom” below captures).

That right to dissent is, to say the least, not true around the globe. Surveys show that not just in countries with political and economic turmoil, but even in advanced nations like the United Kingdom and France, their citizens consistently have somewhat low…
