There’s no shortage of advice out there on how to deliver feedback as a manager. There’s the classic “feedback sandwich” or the “concerned boss”. There are ways of doing it via a questionnaire and many others

Many Managers worry about giving someone negative feedback and for good reason. It can create a deep divide between you and your employees. And if a divide appears it can be hard to bridge it again.

However feedback of the negative variety is not like wine, it does not get better with age. So I’d like to offer a simple way to give your team feedback that has a better chance of having the intended effect.

Giving Feedback

Some of the recommendations on giving employee feedback you read about make sense and are well thought out. Others are a bunch of mumbo jumbo that in my experience end up making things worse than better.

Remember you are there to raise the bar for everyone. It makes no sense to be Mrs. Nice all the time if you aren't seeing improvement where you need it.

So how to straddle that line of being clear and direct but not harming a relationship?
