Coco Gauff won the Women’s U.S. Open tennis title last week, by beating the world’s number-one player. She is somewhat of a Cinderella story recording her first major win.
I’ll admit I’m not a big tennis fan but I became a fan of the young tennis pro after running across her post-game interview after the historic match she won
Gauff did so naturally what all great leaders should do — no, not the winning part, we win some and we lose some. What impressed me was what she did after her victory.
This young woman finding herself on a big stage for the first time had the presence of mind, maturity, and awareness of the importance of that moment to graciously thank everyone who helped make her US Open win possible.
Coco Gauff understands gratitude. Real gratitude — not some cliched, drive by “thank you”, “kudos” or “good job” the way too many leaders do and think they have expressed gratitude. Gauff was poised, heartfelt, gave specifics about each person or group she thanked.
It was a treat to watch because this was genuine gratitude. Coco Gauff’s words reflected a true awareness that no one who pursues a big goal like winning the US Open or leading a successful company does so…
