LISTEN TO “Attitude”: Apple Music / Spotify

Don Toliver brings back the hype to his 4th studio album Hardstone with a new single “Attitude”.

It’s been over 2 months and we’ve learned a ton of additional details about Don’s new album, such as the cover, number of tracks, and a fresh single. What I found interesting is that on Apple Music, the album displays having 4 different discs with 19 tracks in total.

If we look at the current track list, we might see that Don has released a single from each disc, except the fourth and final, which leaves us guessing the song’s direction. I mentioned it because I think each disc represents a unique aesthetic, and the singles confirm this. We’ll discuss it further in a later part of the article, after reviewing the new single “Attitude” with Charlie Wilson and Cash Cobain.

If “Deep In The Water” left me simply unimpressed by its unoriginality with “Attitude”, I am rather revolted. With Cash Cobain at the helm, you may notice striking similarities between this track and “Calling for You” by Drake, as they both showcase his distinctive drums and production approach.

Is production a big problem?

Yes

and

No

Even if the production was the only issue, that alone wouldn’t make the track repulsive. However, Don’s overall performance lacks energy and is repetitive, partially because of the monotonous beat with an annoying ad-lib. It is just not working; the vocals do not have any energy, and so does the beat.

It doesn’t make you dance, vibe, or hyped. In fact, it didn’t make me feel anything.

Really great visuals, tho

Drawing a parallel line with “Deep In The Water”, which I was not a big fan of, and gave it a rating of being OK, it still had some essence. On that track, we heard what Don could do the best which is: to enter the melodic beat, and give you a catchy melodic tune.

Yes, it was not anything new, or impulsive like “Bandit”, but it still was vibrant. It wasn’t revolutionary, but it was still an improvement over most of the Love Sick.

“Attitude”, on the contrary, was simply awful, sounding like a disposable piece. With no catchiness or even memorable hook, it falls short.

The only thing that interested me in that track was a Charlie Wilson feature, not because it was good, but because of how unexpected it was to hear him on that beat.

FINAL RATING: 4.3/10

Returning to the whole 4 disk situation, I think we might even get one more single out of the album, just to get the taste of the 4th disk. If the Don goes all in and delivers completely 4 different discs of 4 tracks each, it would certainly be interesting and exciting to hear.

Despite all the negativity that I have phrased about the track, I am still excited about the album and interested in seeing how and where would the Don go.

So stay tuned and be ready to explore Don’s direction on the 16 of June with me.

Scores guideline:

0–2 (dramatically bad)

2.1–4.5 (bad)

4.6–6 (mediocre/mid)

6.1–6.9 (Ok)

7–7.5 (good)

7.6–8.6 (great)

8.7–9.9 (amazing)

10 (perfect)
