It is confirmed, through various medias and interviews (NYT & HotOnes, particularly), that Bando Stone & the New World is the last Childish Gambino album. In his answers, there seems to be no qualms nor bitterness to be found. Gambino was a character after all, a young, playful one at that — Glover no longer is restricted to these adjectives, as if his last few works weren’t enough of a tell. The nasally, playful rap of Camp and, on occasion, Because The Internet, is oft replaced with deep, sorrowful croons and reflection seen throughout, particularly, Awaken, My Love and Atavista (RIP 3.15.20).

But Bando Stone & the New World, returning to the style of his acclaimed Because The Internet, is accompanied by a short film, one that is interwoven with the soundtrack. Lead singles, “Lithonia,” and “In The Night,” are dynamic, yet reserved in between belts of agony. Jorja Smith and Amaarae slot in melodically over rubbery electronica, a staple that Gambino fans would recognize instantly as a recipe for success, especially in songs like “Heartbeat,” from Camp.
