Ever since Black’s E.P., Rebecca Black Was Here, dropped in 2021 I have been hoping for new work or even an album to come next. Though she has not graced us with a new album yet, she has been dropping new singles since her last project. I enjoyed the hyper-pop sexuality of “Read My Mind” featuring Slayyyter from 2021, but it has been a while since Rebecca dropped a single of her own. She figuratively threw some crumbs our way with her lastest single “Crumbs”. The track is a tease of her upcoming debut album Let Her Burn set to release sometime in 2023. Rebecca shared her inspiration for her latest project with Paper magazine:

“As I enter this new moment, I wanted to explore the vulnerability I’ve felt in finding balance with submission, dominance, and sexuality… I’ve had to dive into my own body to feel the deeply powerful but also dangerous feelings of relinquishing control.”

The track expands well off the electronic pop sound into a dark sleak groove. Vocally, Rebecca sounds confident and sexy. Black takes through the psychological damage that a toxic relationship can leave on someone. The dark, chaos that lines the sonic landscape mirrors her shattered self worth. Rebecca feels she deserving of being emotionally and mentally abused by this person, “You’re bad and I deserve it/ When will I ever learn?/ I get off on getting hurt.

The song’s second verse puts a sexual twist on this lust for pain. Again, she alludes to the deluded gratification of being treated like trash. The chorus, “You can make a mess/ And I’ll pick up the crumbs/ And there’s nothing you could do to make me love you less,” a sort of double meaning of picking up the pieces of yourself that constantly shattered and grabbing at any inkling of attention that they could give you.

The official music video to “Crumbs” directed by Luke Orlando.

I am quite excited to see what will come next with Black’s upcoming debut Let Her Burn. “Crumbs” expands well off the hyper pop stylings brought by her 2021 E.P. Rebecca Black Was Here. It’s a club ready banger that has such a sexy groove underlying the vocals. I love the breakdown at the end of the song that sort of signifies Black’s own shattering self worth. If you still think of the now memed to death “Friday” when picturing Black, you are doing such a disservice to yourself. She’s a force to be reckoned with in the underground pop scene. “Crumbs” is a testament to her talent.

My overall rating: 9.0 out of 10.
