The eighth album from the pop phenom sees Cyrus continue to find herself, musically and emotionally.

Few pop stars have the musical pedigree and stature of Miley Cyrus.

Daughter of country star Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley made her own name for herself as the child star of the Disney Channel’s hit show Hannah Montana. Her stint on TV introduced audiences not only to her quirky and lovable personality, but also her distinctive singing voice.

Going from child actor to adult pop star, she underwent a very public transformation. Her 2013 album Bangerz saw her fully embrace her newfound maturity, leading to a number of well-publicized scandals that greatly impacted her public perception. From there, her experimental project Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz continued down the road of overt sexuality and pot smoking, created in collaboration with the Flaming Lips. This proved quite divisive, and reception was negative more often than not.

Since then, it seems like Cyrus has been working to reinvent her sound and distance herself from the more controversial elements of her public persona. That said, between the country pop of 2017’s Younger Now and the vintage hard rock of 2020’s Plastic Hearts, I’m unsure that she’s found a sound since Bangerz where she sounds truly herself.
