Get Me By Justice Hmix | Track Review
My take on the Brooklyn rapper’s latest single
In lieu of an album review as a handful of projects I’m looking forward to won’t be dropping for a few more weeks, let’s take a quick look at Brooklyn rapper Justice Hmix’s latest single “Get Me”. Justice reached out to me via Instagram and gave me an early listen to the track before its September 9th release date, so Justice if you’re reading this I appreciate you reaching out to me!
“Get Me” Is Justice Hmix’s first single since 2020’s “Strings”. While his discography isn’t as large as you might think, what you’ll be treated to is a handful of amazing tracks and guest verses seeping in quality I honestly would not expect from an underground artist such as him. So naturally, “Get Me” is no exception to this rule. Teaming up with Landolyrical, Lando, and D Wynn, Justice’s latest single checks all the boxes for what you would want on a rap song. Clever bars full of double entendres, and a beat that’ll have you doing the stank face throughout its 4-minute runtime.
produced by Justice Hmix himself, “Get Me” taps back into the golden age of New York rap with its boom-bap-influenced beat, yet still remaining futuristic with these hints of a filtered electric guitar that plays during the chorus. I also have to highlight the percussions throughout the entire song, the kicks and snares hit just right and add to the song’s overall vibe.
I’m still coming off of the lyrical high from JID’s latest album The Forever Story, but “Get Me” has got me going once again. Justice kicks the song off with some braggadocious energy, flaunting his success. He even throws in a Stanely Kubrick nod (“ I go stupid, I go Kubrick leave ya Eyes Wide Shut.”). In between verses, Landolyrical comes through with a dancehall-Esque chorus that fits perfectly with the track.
Guest features like Lando and D Wynn build off of Justice’s energy with their verses. While the former offers a small anecdote about a drug-abusing uncle and how he hopes their conversations can change him for the better. The latter reminds himself why he needs to rap in the first place (“Boy been a legend since I could open my eyes I just followed what I felt inside.”).
Overall I’m quite impressed with “Get Me”. As my first foray into Justice Hmix’s music, I admire the dedication he brings to the craft, offering up something a bit more refreshing for the genre. For this single, I’m feeling a solid 8/10 on “Get Me”. I’ll be keeping an eye out for his future material, he’s certainly got my attention, and I’m sure he’ll grab yours very soon.
