LISTEN TO “HIGHJACK”: APPLE MUSIC | SPOTIFY

With quite a modest release, A$AP Rocky gets into the rollout mode for his 4th studio album DON’T BE DUMB.

Folks, I will be honest. I am so thrilled about getting a new record from Rocky. It felt like ages, honestly. Since the quite experimental, and genre-blending TESTING, we were in the stage of abundance of Rocky’s full-length project.

In the last 6 years, A$AP took another turn in his career, and rather concentrated on building his own life, relationship, and legacy.

In those 6 years, there have been plenty of rumours about the potential direction of the following record. The initial release was called ALL SMILES, later transitioning to the GRIM, and after the release of the single “D.M.B.” as a shout to his wife, there has been another switch up in roll-out to Ghetto Love Stories. The reason for all of those switch ups and such a big number of scrapped albums is Rocky’s attitude towards leaks.

On NMD (New Music Daily) for Apple Music, Rocky says that once something is leaked, it is not making it to the project.

It is what it is. It’s out already.

However, through all those twists and turns, we have made it to the leading single to A$AP Rocky’s DON’T BE DUMB — “HIGHJACK”.

“HIGHJACK” is such an interesting piece, because when I first heard the song, I was confused. The beat and delivery seemed kind of simple and unoriginal to me, however with more through listening, it grew on me drastically. I absolutely love what Rocky has done here, as “HIGHJACK” is a perfect demonstration of how TESTING and AT. LONG. LAST. A$AP would sound together. Blending of cloud rap and neo-psychedelia elements of both albums resulted in a pretty solid track.

This cut is an example of a high-quality song with Rocky’s hungry delivery and a psychedelic twist in the middle of the song.

Do I still feel like the song may be too simple for 6 years wait?

Yes, I do, however, I do not enjoy less of it.

On this track, Rocky proves that sometimes less is more, and that something doesn’t have to be revolutionary to make you enjoy it.

To recap, DON’T BE DUMB will be released on August 30th, and as usual, Modern Music Publication will be there to cover it.

I want to give “HIGHJACK” a solid 8.7/10, as I feel like the record is quite amazing, and deserves to be highly rated.
