LISTEN TO “Lets Get On Dey Ass”: APPLE MUSIC | SPOTIFY

The 2024 has been an incredibly massive year for Yachty.

His constant presence with big and small releases has completely shifted my expectations of current hip-hop and trap music to something more extraordinary. In those 2 past years, for me, Yachty became one of the prominent faces of the current hip-hop wave, alongside JID, Baby Keem, Denzel, and others.

If I am being honest, I am extremely happy that we got even more of his music after the release of the Bad Cameo, his joint effort with James Blake. On that album, I felt like Yachty was not advancing his style that much, as Blake’s esque production constrained him, rather than opened new possibilities.

Yachty is clearly experimenting with his current discography to see what works and what doesn’t. With records like “Cold Sunday”, Lil Boat ventured into jazz rap. In the song “Something Ether”, the rapper connected himself with an extremely experimental aesthetic of industrial hip-hop, and now he is switching up again.

Some may feel that “Lets Get On Dey Ass” is just a trap track from Yachty that we have heard on records like Lil Boat 3, which I understand.

When I first played that track, I instantly heard the melody of the track “BACKR00MS” by Playboi Carti. Something about the track gives you the feel of that new deep-voice Carti aesthetic. Even with Yachty’s random ad-libs like “What?” or sudden transitions to a deeper voice, Carti’s influence is clear.

Yet, I don’t see it as a drawback; I find Yachty’s approach more appealing and captivating. In “Let’s Get On Dey Ass,” Lil Boat once again confidently displays his versatility, proving that he is far from your typical trap artist. While the track does incorporate some trap elements, it goes beyond the generic trap sound.

The loop of auto-tuned Yachty vocals on the track closer to the chorus creates a background instrument for that segment, filling up noise with a haunting melody. To achieve this more aggressive melody, the kicks, and leading synth do their job perfectly in conveying Yachty’s braggadocios message.

Well, it is another good quality track from Yachty. I do not grant him the same grade as I did on “Cold Sunday”, but I certainly give him a great rating. The track’s intro may be a hint at the transition between tracks and a potential new album by Yachty, although I could be wrong.

FINAL RATING: 7.7/10 ( GREAT )
